Vick Breaks Hand, Britt Injures Knee
(The Spread) – Michael Vick is banged up again, and this time it’s a broken hand.
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, who bounced back from a concussion last week, injured his non-throwing right hand after he was hit hard by Chris Canty in the third quarter of a 29-16 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. Vick’s status for next week’s game against San Francisco was uncertain.
Tennessee might be without one of its big stars when wide receiver Kenny Britt limped out of the stadium after a win against Denver wearing a brace over his right knee. Coach Mike Munchak would not speculate on the seriousness of the injury.
Undefeated Buffalo had a scare in its come-from-behind 34-31 win over New England when rookie cornerback Aaron Williams was wheeled off the field on a stretcher with a chest injury. He’s out indefinitely.
At Philadelphia, Vick started against the Giants despite a concussion in a loss to Atlanta last Sunday. He wasn’t too happy about the hit in this one, which occurred on a 23-yard completion to Jeremy Maclin in the third quarter.
“I felt I got hit late. No flag,” Vick said. “At some point, something catastrophic is gonna happen. Not to blame the refs, but more precautions should be taken. I’m on the ground all the time in the pocket.”
It appeared on replays that Canty hit Vick in the facemask with his helmet.
“Every time I throw the ball, I’m on the ground,” Vick said. “I get hit in the head. I don’t know why I don’t get the 15-yard flag like everybody else does. I’m not trying to blame the refs. I just want them to take notice.”
At Nashville, Tenn., Britt had little to say as he walked out of the locker room past reporters.
“My status is limping,” Britt said.
Britt came into Sunday’s game leading the AFC with 271 yards receiving. He was hurt just after catching his third pass, his knee buckling as Britt tried to turn upfield. Munchak said Britt will have tests either Sunday night or Monday to determine the extent of the damage.
The third-year receiver stayed on the ground for a few minutes before being helped to the sideline. He limped heavily, barely able to touch his right foot to the ground. He then was carted off the sideline to the locker room and didn’t return.
At Buffalo, coach Chan Gailey would only say that Williams was having tests and it’s unlikely the injury is season-ending.
Buffalo’s second-round pick was hurt while making a diving attempt to tackle receiver Wes Welker, who made a catch on a crossing route over the middle with 2:37 left in the third quarter. Williams landed chest down on the turf, and it also appeared that Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin might have landed on him.
Williams lay on the field for about five minutes before he was lifted onto a stretcher and taken to the locker room.
New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie left the team’s 34-24 loss at Oakland with a rib injury and was having X-rays taken. Quarterback Mark Sanchez was hit in the face on a play and was going to have X-rays to check if his nose was broken.
Also, New Orleans right tackle Zach Strief (right knee) and center Olin Kreutz (left leg) left the Saints’ 40-33 win over Houston. Coach Sean Payton declined to discuss their injuries.
Carolina cornerback Chris Gamble left the Panthers’ 16-10 win over Jacksonville in the second quarter with an unspecified injury. Jaguars running back Montell Owens left with a knee injury on a third-quarter kickoff return.
Miami guard Vernon Carey injured his right shoulder in the first quarter of the Dolphins’ 17-16 loss at Cleveland and was scheduled to have tests Monday.
Meanwhile, Browns running back Peyton Hillis was inactive because of strep throat. He was sent home sick with a high fever before practice Friday, came to the stadium Sunday but left a few hours before kickoff against the Dolphins.
Baltimore safety Haruki Nakamura injured his left knee in the first half of the Ravens’ 37-7 rout of St. Louis. Tampa Bay safety Cody Grimm suffered a knee injury in the Buccaneers’ 16-13 win over Atlanta, but there was no announcement on the severity.
San Diego cornerback Quentin Jammer (hamstring) and defensive linemen Jacques Cesaire (knee) and Antonio Garay (head) were hurt in the fourth quarter of the Chargers’ 20-17 win over Kansas City.
