STL-SEA Free Pick

Seattle, WA – Two teams that finished at the bottom of the NFC West standings will clash Sunday afternoon when the Seattle Seahawks host the St. Louis Rams at 4:00PM ET.

Bet NFL Week 1

After another embarrassing finish (one in which they wound up having the second worst record in the NFL for the second consecutive year), the Rams decided to go in another direction. So they hired former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to become their new head coach in hopes he can instill drive, toughness and focus back into the organization.

The Seahawks meanwhile, have gone through some changes themselves. Longtime head coach Mike Holmgren decided to step down from his head coaching position and hand the reigns off to former Falcons head coach Jim Mora. Greg Knapp is the new offensive coordinator and the Seahawks believe that with a healthy Matt Hasselbeck back under center and more talent on the defensive side of the ball, they might be able to get back on top in the NFC West.

Oddsmakers from online sports book BetOnline have made the Seahawks 8-point favorites at home against the Rams. The over/under total for this matchup has been established at 41.

The last time these two teams met, the Seahawks edged the Rams 23-20 to barely cover the 2-point spread in December of last year. In September of last year, Seattle knocked off St. Louis 37-13 and also covered the 8-point spread.

With Hasselbeck now back under center, the Seahawks shouldn’t have any problems moving the ball – at least through the air. The Seattle ground game might be an issue again this year, although the team did sign Edgerrin James to help them in that area.

The Rams still have issues along the defensive line and in the secondary, so we expect Hasselbeck and new receiving toy T.J. Houshmandzadeh to fully take advantage of that and exploit St. Louis’s suspect defense. Seattle should also be much improved defensively and as long as they can keep running back Steven Jackson contained, they should walk away with a win and a cover.

The total has gone under in five of Seattle’s last six games at home and six of their last nine games period. Thus, we also recommend taking the under in this contest.

Our NFL Week 1 Free Picks for this matchup are: SEATTLE -8 and UNDER 41.
