Houston, TX - The Houston Texans have high hopes for 2009, but they must keep their quarterback healthy in order to accomplish their goals this season.

Matt Schaub and the Texans will open the 2009 season by hosting the New York Jets at 1:00PM ET on Sunday.

Bet NFL Week 1

Thanks to an explosive young running back in Steve Slaton, a phenomenal receiver in Andre Johnson and an improving offensive line and defense, the Texans are ready to push for a playoff spot in 2009. But Schaub must stay healthy or else Houston will once again hover around .500 or worse.

The Jets will rely on rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez and rookie head coach Rex Ryan to turn around their fortune. Ryan named Sanchez the starter after impressing coaches with his calm, cool demeanor in preseason.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made the Texans 5-point home favorites against the Jets. The over/under total for this game has been established at 44.

Don’t expect Ryan to put the game on the shoulders of Sanchez. Instead, the trio of Jets’ running backs – Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shonn Greene – will be counted on to grind out yards and keep the chains moving. The Jets will then take shots in the passing game when it presents itself.

If Houston can stop the run, they’ll come away with a victory on Sunday. But they struggled in that area last year and given how good the Jets’ O-line is, the Texans could struggle getting off the field and this could wind up being a tight game.

We’re banking on the Texans struggling to stop the run and therefore advice taking the points. The Jets should be better defensively under Ryan and will come out fired up ready to play.

The over also looks like a solid play, considering the total has gone over in 12 of Houston’s last 18 games and in six of Houston’s last nine games at home.

Our NFL Week 1 Free Picks for this matchup are: NEW YORK JETS +5 and OVER 44.
