Glendale, AZ – NFC West foes get together Sunday afternoon at University of Phoenix Stadium when the Arizona Cardinals host the San Francisco 49ers.
The defending NFC Champion Cardinals will look to bounce back from their loss in the Super Bowl and build off what they were able to accomplish last season. They’ll once again feature a fantastic aerial assault, led by quarterback Kurt Warner and the best receiving duo in the league in Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.
The Niners are also looking to build off the success they had last year, although Mike Singletary and company still have a ways to go. There are some doubts about whether or not quarterback Shaun Hill can lead this team to the playoffs, especially considering San Fran’s offensive line is still a work in progress.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Cardinals 6-point home favorites in their matchup with the 49ers. The over/under total for this game has also been established at 46.
The last time these two teams met, the 49ers covered the 10-point spread in a 29-24 loss to the Cardinals in Arizona last November. In San Francisco, the Cardinals walked a way with a 23-13 victory while covering the 2.5-point spread as favorites.
While the Cardinals are getting a lot of attention coming off their Super Bowl run, don’t forget that they lost (one was fired) two coordinators this offseason, including offensive playcaller Todd Haley. San Francisco also has a secondary that can at least contain Fitzgerald and Boldin, so if Arizona can’t run the ball (something it struggled with last year), then they might have trouble blowing the Niners out.
Nobody is going to confuse Hill with Steve Young, but the journeymen quarterback does have good mobility and plays hard under Singletary. The Niners also ran the ball extremely well in preseason, so look for Frank Gore and rookie Glen Coffee to see action early as San Fran tries to control this game on the ground.
We advise taking the Niners and the six points in this matchup. We also like the over in this game. The total has gone over in 5 of San Fran’s last 5 games when playing on the road against Arizona.
