Browns vs. Bucs Free Pick
In the battle of fourth place teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the Cleveland Browns in Week 1. Let’s take a look at this matchup.
Bet Browns vs. Bucs Odds
Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com list the Buccaneers as a 3-point favorite over the Browns in Week 1, while the over/under total for this game has been set at 37.
Browns Win If:
Cleveland has to win this game on the ground with Jerome Harrison. Their strengths are in their running game and their ever-improving defense, so putting the game in quarterback Jake Delhomme’s hands would be a mistake. Harrison is more than capable of leading the ground attack, especially if his offensive line can open holes for him. Defensively, the Browns’ secondary is pretty damn good and will continue to be as long as rookie T.J. Ward can step up at strong safety. Where this team will have problems is rushing the passer, although Mike Roth was outstanding last year in that department.
Bucs Win If:
They get a huge game out of Cadillac Williams. Josh Freeman broke his thumb in preseason and he may wear a splint on it during the game. That’s not good considering the Bucs’ passing game is going to be weak even when he has two good thumbs. That means Williams is going to have to take this game over on the ground and Tampa’s young, but talented defense takes over the game. Thanks to a solid linebacker corps comprised of Barrett Ruud, Quincy Black and Geno Hayes, Tampa should be able to take away the run. The secondary is a concern, but the Browns don’t have any true playmakers in the passing game and Delhomme isn’t going to beat them through the air.
Prediction:
The Bucs have the tools defensively to stop the Browns’ running game, but as long as Eric Mangini sticks with the ground attack than Cleveland should be able to eek out a road win. Thanks to a suspect offense, the Bucs’ defense could be left on the field too long and the Browns can wear them down in the second half with Harrison. I think this is a game the Browns win in the fourth quarter, although don’ t expect a lot of points. I can’t see too many big plays occurring in Tampa this week.
