NFL Week 1 Free Picks
Week 1 of the NFL season is finally here! Let’s try to kick off the year with a couple of winners in what should be a great opening week of football.
While we here at theSpread.com like to hand out free picks on both the side and totals for every game (which you can find in our NFL articles section), below are my top four selections for Week 1. You can find the expanded write ups on each game in our NFL section.
Best of luck no matter what side you’re on today.
Atlanta Falcons vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 1:00PM ET
This is a bad matchup for both offenses and I suspect both teams will play things conservatively throughout. The Falcons are in unfamiliar territory playing on the road and the Steelers are starting an inexperienced quarterback. Neither of these teams is going to open it up and I imagine while see a steady diet of Rashard Mendenhall and Michael Turner. Expect field goals instead of touchdowns today.
Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans, 1:00PM ET
People are high on the Texans this year and they should be. But their secondary is a huge concern and the last thing a team wants when facing the Colts is questions in the defensive backfield. I don’t think this is the game the Texans overcome their fears of playing their biggest division rival – even though they get Indy at home. Peyton Manning should feast on talented, but inexperienced corner Kareem Jackson and the Colts win this one easier than people think.
Green Bay Packers vs. Philadelphia Eagles, 4:00PM ET
Aside from the Colts, the Packers appear to be the most complete team in football heading into the season and they’re legit Super Bowl contenders. But this seems like a trap for bettors. The Eagles are a solid, deep team and it’s hard for opponents to come into Philly and earn a win. Kevin Kolb has looked good this offseason and if he can limit the mistakes, I think the Eagles win this outright.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins, 8:20PM ET
There’s just too much uncertainty when it comes to the Redskins. The offensive line, running back and receiver positions are all question marks and Donovan McNabb isn’t 100% healthy. I think Washington is going to need a few weeks to gel under Mike Shanahan, which means bettors should be able to take advantage of a low point spread in this one. The Cowboys are by far the better team.
