GREEN BAY, WI (The Spread) – The 2011-12 NFL Season officially kicks off Thursday night when the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Green Bay Packers, host the New Orleans Saints.
The Packers were 10-6 last season and reached the playoffs as a wildcard entry but went on to win the Super Bowl. The Saints were 11-5 last season and also were a wildcard team. They lost in the opening round of the playoffs. New Orleans has won three of the last four meetings and the winning team has also covered the spread in the last seven meetings. These two will meet Thursday night at 8:30PM ET on NBC.

The Super Bowl MVP threw for a total of 3,922 yards during the season. The Packers had one of the top defenses in the NFL last season, holding opponents to just 15 points and 309 yards per game. The Packers had 24 interceptions and 47 sacks. Clay Matthews was named Defensive MVP last season after racking up 14 sacks.
The Saints were 11-5 overall and 6-2 on the road last season. The Saints averaged 24 points and 372.5 points per game. The Saints had one of the top passing attacks in the league, averaging 277.6 passing yards per game on the arm of Drew Brees. Brees threw for 4,620 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, but also had 22 interceptions. New Orelans’ defense was surprisingly strong last season, holding opponents to 19.2 points and 306.3 yards per game. The Saints allowed just 193.9 passing yards per game, which ranked fourth in the NFL.
In terms of Injuries, Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley is listed as questionable with an ankle injury while linebacker Frank Zombo is doubtful with a shoulder injury. For the Saints, defensive end Will Smith is serving a two-game suspension from the NFL while receiver Lance Moore is doubtful to play due to a groin injury.
