Bucs at Jags Odds
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t have to travel far for their second preseason game of the year, as the Bucs will take on the Jaguars in Jacksonville Saturday night at 7:30PM ET.
Both of these teams are 0-1 entering this contest, as Tampa lost 27-20 on the road at Tennessee, while Jacksonville fell 12-9 at Miami.
For the Buccaneers, new head coach Raheem Morris has decided on which quarterback he’ll start for Saturday’s game. Will it be Luke McCown or Byron Leftwich? Either way, the Jaguars’ 3-4 defensive scheme usually gives the Bucs fits, so it’ll be a challenge for no matter who is under center.
Tampa is also going through a whirlwind of changes defensively. They lost long-time defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin this offseason when he was hired for the same position under his son at the University of Tennessee. Then more recently, safety Tanard Jackson was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy and cornerback Aqib Talib was arrested to allegedly punching a cab driver and resisting arrest.
For the Jaguars, this season is all about staying healthy after dealing with injuries for much of the ’08 season. They retooled their offensive line through the draft with the selections of tackles Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton, and the team hopes that those additions will get quarterback David Garrard back on track.
Of course, running back Maurice Jones-Drew will still be the backbone of the Jaguars’ offense and head coach Jack Del Rio is hoping that his defense will play better after being stranded on the field in most games last year.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Jaguars 3-point favorites in this matchup. The over/under total has been set at 34.
This one is probably too tough to call, but it would be wise to stick with the home team and take Jacksonville, especially with Tampa’s quarterback and secondary situations being in flux. The under is a good call too with how physical these defenses can play.
