Bucs 2013-14 Season Odds
TAMPA, FL (The Spread) - Could the Tampa Bay Buccaneers be a sleeper this year in the NFC South?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Bucs are 50/1 long shots to win the 2014 Super Bowl and 25/1 to win the NFC Conference title next season. They also have the longest odds to win the NFC South Division at +500, and their over/under total is 7.5 for number of wins in 2013.
The Bucs didn't have a first-round pick this year because they parted with it in exchange for cornerback Darrelle Revis (Jets). But in the second round they selected Mississippi State cornerback Johnthan Banks and in the third they took North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon. In the fourth they nabbed Illinois defensive tackle Akeem Spence and Michigan State defensive end William Gholston.
Tampa Bay has invested money and draft picks in efforts to upgrade its secondary the past two offseasons. After selecting Alabama safety Mark Barron in the first round last year and trading for Revis this year, they also signed free agent Dashon Goldson to play along side Barron and drafted Banks to challenge Leonard Johnson for the corner spot opposite Revis. Considering they play in the same division as Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton, it's a wise investment for the Bucs.
The key for this team is quarterback Josh Freeman, who was off to a terrific start last year before collapsing in horrific fashion toward the end of the year. Thanks to Vincent Jackson and Doug Martin, the Bucs have surrounded Freeman with enough talent to succeed, but he needs to perform better under pressure and in the clutch. If Tampa fails to make the postseason again this year, Greg Schiano and Co. might be willing to move on from Freeman in the offseason.
