Panthers 2013 NFL Season Odds
CHARLOTTE, NC (The Spread) - Were the moves the Carolina Panthers made this offseason enough to make a run in the NFC South and beyond?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Panthers are 66/1 to win the 2014 Super Bowl and 33/1 to win the NFC Conference title this season. They're also +450 to win the NFC South Division behind the Falcons (+140) and Saints (+160), and have an over/under total of 7 for number of wins in 2013-14.
In this year's draft, the Panthers selected Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei with the 14th overall pick and Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short with the 44th overall selection. In the sixth, they added athletic running back Kenjon Barner from Oregon.
Third-year quarterback Cam Newton holds the key to Carolina's success this season, but does he have enough weapons? The Panthers' running game should once again be effective thanks to Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, but the receiving corps of Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell and Aarmanti Edwards leaves something to be desired.
Defensively, the additions of Lotulelei and Short should upgrade the run defense but the secondary remains a massive question mark. That's a problem when you consider that Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay all have offenses capable of racking up points through the air.
