Cardinals 2013-14 Season Odds
Phoenix, AZ (The Spread) – Despite adding a new head coach and trading for a veteran quarterback this offseason, the Arizona Cardinals remain massive long shots to win this year’s Super Bowl.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Cardinals are 125/1 long shots to win the 2014 Super Bowl and are 66/1 to win the NFC Conference title this season. They’re also +2000 to win the NFC West Division and have an over/under of 5.5 for number of wins they’ll accumulate in 2014.
The Cardinals hired former Colts and Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians as head coach this year, replacing the fired Ken Whisenhunt. They also traded for veteran quarterback Carson Palmer and upgraded their offensive line with the selection of Jonathan Cooper in the first round of this year’s draft. The addition of Eric Winston also helps at right tackle.
But while Palmer is a fit for Arians’ vertical-based passing attack and the O-line should be better than it was a year ago, Arizona currently doesn’t have a reliable running game to lean on. Rashard Mendenhall and Ryan Williams can’t shake the injury prone label and Stepfan Taylor isn’t a true threat to lead the team. At least Palmer does have good weapons in the passing game thanks to Larry Fitzgerald, Rob Housler and former first-round pick Michael Floyd.
The bigger overall problem for the Cardinals is the fact that they play in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. It’s going to be difficult for Arizona to keep pace with the likes of Seattle and San Francisco in the NFC West, or even an improved St. Louis team for that matter. The task becomes even more difficult with linebacker Daryl Washington serving a four-game suspension to start the year.
