Chargers Season Odds

With other teams in their division expected to struggle this season, the San Diego Chargers are massive favorites to win the AFC West in 2009.

With not many holes to fill, the Bolts were quiet this offseason. They made it a priority to hang onto running back Darren Sproles, which they did by applying the franchise tag on him, and also restructure LaDainian Tomlinson’s contract, which they did as well. They also signed linebacker Kevin Burnett, formerly of the Cowboys.

In the draft, San Diego added one of the top pass rushing prospects in Northern Illinois’ Larry English, who could replace Shawne Merriman if the linebacker doesn’t bounce back from the knee injury that cost him most of his 2008 season (or if the team decides not to re-sign him when his contract ends in a year).

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL have established the Chargers’ odds to win Super Bowl XLIV at 14/1. They’ve also given San Diego 8/1 odds to win the AFC and -800 odds to win the AFC West.

Are the Chargers one of the best teams in the NFL right now? No, although they are talented. But are they going to win the AFC West? Probably, especially with the Broncos, Chiefs and Raiders all expected to struggle in 2009. And if they make the postseason, they’ve proved in the last couple of years that they can be a dangerous playoff team. Tomlinson, Sproles, Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates all return offensively, while a healthy Merriman should help an above-average defense. Again, this team should win their division and if they get a couple of home playoff games, who knows how far they can go.
