Saints Season Odds

The New Orleans Saints believe they have all the pieces to make a run in the NFC and at Super Bowl XLIV.

But do they have enough quality defensive pieces to make to turn their beliefs into reality?

But NFL Futures Odds

Drew Brees, Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey and an underrated offensive line all return in 2009, so the Saints once again concentrated on defense this offseason. The team signed free agent defensive end Paul Spicer and safety Darren Sharper, as well as re-signed linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

In the draft, the Saints only had one pick in the first three rounds and while head coach Sean Payton would have liked to add a bruiser running back like Chris “Beanie” Wells, the team eventually decided to go defense. New Orleans selected cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and hope he can replace Mike McKenzie, who was released in the offseason.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL have established the Saints’ odds to win Super Bowl XLIV at 20/1. They’ve also given New Orleans 10/1 odds to win the NFC and 1.8/1 odds to win the NFC South.

The Saints offer tremendous value at 20/1 to win Super Bowl XLIV based on their offensive firepower alone. Brees is the perfect signal caller from Payton’s offense and Thomas is a young star in the making. If Bush and Shockey can stay relatively healthy, New Orleans’ offense will once again be hard to stop. But defensively, the Saints have some issues. First, defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith are expected to miss the first four games of the season due to suspension. While the addition of Spicer should help, if the Saints can’t get to the quarterback then the secondary is going to be susceptible to giving up big plays. So while the offense should put up plenty of points, they may have to because the defense could be shredded. Then again, once the defensive line is at full strength, New Orleans’ D might actually be underrated.
