Panthers give Newton an extension
CHARLOTTE, NC (TheSpread) – The Carolina Panthers have locked up their quarterback for a long time, signing Cam Newton to a five-year extension.
Newton has become the third-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after agreeing to a five-year, $103.8 million extension on Tuesday. The deal reportedly is worth $60 million guaranteed and will give him $67.6 million over the first three years of the contract.
“I’m thankful this opportunity came and it’s over with,” Newton said after signing the deal. “Now that I can focus on playing football and getting the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl, it puts me somewhat in cruise control at the moment. But yet, me understanding so much is going to be expected of me for more.”
According to the latest oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the Panthers are currently listed at 40/1 to win the Super Bowl next season. Seattle is currently favored with 6/1 odds while Green Bay has 7/1 odds.
Newton has spent four seasons playing for the Panthers. He has thrown for 14,426 yards and 82 touchdowns in that span while rushing for 2,571 yards and 33 scores. He has taken Carolina to the playoffs two times in his career. He is coming off a 2014 season where he threw for 3,127 yards and 18 touchdowns while throwing 12 interceptions. Newton also rushed for 539 yards and five scores. He appeared in 14 of the team’s 16 games.
