49ers unlikely to pick up Smith option
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (The Spread) – Following his latest run in with the law, the 49ers aren’t expected to pick up the option on linebacker Aldon Smith’s contract according to reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers are unlikely to pick up the fifth-year option for 2015 on Smith’s contract. The team has until May 3 to decide and there’s already some doubt that Smith will even suit up for the Niners in 2014.
That said, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Niners aren’t planning to release Smith despite the fact that he could be suspended for the first part of next season. He’s set to appear in court on April 29 on gun and DUI charges even before his arrest last Sunday for making a bomb threat at LAX.
“It is possible Aldon Smith isn’t on the field because he may be in jail,” Rapoport said Thursday.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the 49ers are currently 15/2 to win the 2015 Super Bowl, which given them the same odds as the Patriots. The Seahawks, meanwhile, are 6/1 to repeat as Super Bowl champs, while the Broncos have the next-best odds at 7/1.
