2011 NFL Lockout Odds
(The Spread) – Oddsmakers have made 2011 NFL lockout odds available to the betting public, but if you think a new CBA deal won’t be signed by March 4 then you’ll be laying a pretty penny on the money line.
According to online sports book Sportsbook.com, a wager on “Yes” to the prop “Will there be an NFL lockout March 4th, 2011,” is –400 on the money line, while a wager on “No” is +300. That means for every $100 you want to win on a wager of “Yes,” you’ll have to lay $400. Conversely, you’ll win $300 for every $100 bet on “No.”
Sportsbook.com also has a separate prop available for, “Will the 2011 NFL scheduled season start on time.” A wager on “Yes” is +160, while a wager on “No” is –200. So for every $100 you wager on “Yes,” you’ll net a profit of $160 and for every $100 you want to win for a wager on “No,” you’ll have to lay $200.
There are no guarantees when it comes to gambling but the first prop bet seems like a slam-dunk. Earlier this week, the NFL owners walked away from the negotiating table when the NFLPA proposed to take an average of 50% of all revenue generated by the league. Because of this, a five-hour second negotiating session scheduled for Thursday was canceled and no further meetings have been proposed.
It’s already mid-February and if the two sides can’t even agree to meet, so how are they going to get a new deal ironed out by March 4 when the current CBA contract expires? It seems like a certainty that the NFL is heading for a lockout, which is obviously why oddsmakers have adjusted accordingly by making a wager on “yes” for that first prop –400. That said, there may be value in that second prop, however.
Even if a lockout begins on March 4, there’s still roughly seven months between that point and the start of a new season, so the 2011 NFL season could still start on time. That’s why a wager on “Yes” for “Will the 2011 NFL scheduled season start on time?” at +160 seems like a good value. Both sides stand to lose a lot of money if there’s no season and the ridicule from fans would be unbearable. Considering most people can’t afford to take their children to a game because of the high-ticket prices, fans aren’t going to sympathize with million dollar athletes and owners.
Hopefully a new deal will get done soon and we’ll have football in 2011. But again, it seems unlikely that anything will get done before March 4.
