AFC Championship Game Odds

(The Spread) – The Patriots may have lost Super Bowl XLVI but oddsmakers favors New England to repeat as AFC champions in 2013.

The Patriots have opened as 3/1 favorites to win the 2013 AFC Championship Game next season. Their odds are slightly better than the Ravens (5/1), Texans (5/1), Steelers (5/1) and Chargers (13/2).

The Pats fell to the Giants in this year’s Super Bowl but beat the Ravens in the 2012 AFC title game. The Ravens, meanwhile, beat the Texans in the Divisional Round of the 2012 NFL postseason while the Steelers lost to the Broncos in the Wildcard Round. The Chargers didn’t even make the postseason but they have enough talent every year to reach the postseason if they don’t get in their own way.

Speaking of Denver, Tim Tebow and Co. are 25/1 long shots to win the AFC championship in 2013 despite knocking off the Steelers on Wildcard Weekend. The Broncos backed into the playoffs on the final week of the 2011 regular season when the Chargers defeated the Raiders. The Broncos made the most of their opportunity by advancing to the Divisional Round, but they ran into a buzz saw otherwise known as the New England Patriots.

Some other odds of note are the Jets (8/1), Bengals (18/1) and Colts (18/1). Last year was the first time in three seasons that the Jets didn’t advance to the AFC title game under head coach Rex Ryan as Mark Sanchez once again had an inconsistent season (to put it nicely). The Bengals, meanwhile, shocked the masses by making the playoffs with a rookie quarterback in Andy Dalton leading the way. And speaking of a rookie quarterback, the Colts are expected to draft Stanford’s Andrew Luck in the first round of April’s draft and part ways with long-time signal caller Peyton Manning. It’ll be interesting to see how Indy fares next season if Luck takes over the reins right away.
