According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, the Packers are 3-point favorites over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. The over/under total for the championship game is 44.5 points, although that number could rise as we get closer to kickoff.
Of the 76,000-plus wagers on this year’s Super Bowl, 51% of the public backs the Steelers at +3 according to latest NFL public betting information. Even though the Packers have been a fan and media darling over the last couple of weeks, it’s assumed that the public likes Ben Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh mostly because of their recent experience in the Super Bowl. The Steelers have won two of the last six title games, and that’s still current in public bettors minds.
That said, it is a little surprising that Green Bay isn’t the slight favorite in public bettors’ eyes when you think of how much the public backed the Packers against the Eagles, Falcons and Bears. Thanks to Aaron Rodgers and the Pack’s high-powered offense, one would think that the public would drool over Green Bay for the Super Bowl.
According to latest NFL trends, the Steelers are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall and 9-1 ATS in their last 10 playoff games. They’re also 4-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 4-1 ATS in their last five playoff games as an underdog. The split in the last two Super Bowls they were in, covering against the Seahawks in 2006 but winning and failing to cover against the Cardinals in 2008.
The Packers are 5-1 against the number versus a team with a winning record and 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall. They’re 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as a favorite and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games on field turf. They’ve also covered in all three of their postseason games this year, all of which were played on the road.
