Cards' Future Odds

Even before the Arizona Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Eagles to secure their place in Super Bowl 43, calls and emails were pouring in from people looking for information about the Cards’ odds to win the 2009 Super Bowl.

We have taken hundreds of questions from all over the world asking some variation of, “What would a wager on the Arizona Cardinals of paid if you would of placed your wager earlier in the season?”

Since so many people want to know about this and it’s a rather lengthy explanation, we decided to write an article about it.

First, to know about what the Arizona Cardinals paid out you must also know about NFL futures and how they are set/adjusted.

Bet NFL Future Odds

Online sports betting sites like Bodog.com and Sportsbook.com offer bettors the chance to bet money and get paid odds on whether they can predict how an event will end in advance. These types of wagers are called” futures”.  A future is a wager that can be placed at anytime in advance of a sporting event, such as the 2009 NFL Super Bowl XLIII.

These wagers are popular with bettors because they pay odds and you can get a higher payout then you would on say betting the side or the over/under. As you will see with the Arizona Cardinals’ odds to win Super Bowl 43, teams who are considered poor started out as long shots prior to the start of the season and those odds adjust after the season starts based on a team’s performance and other factors. Sports books do this to entice betting while still managing risk.

Below you can see how oddsmakers adjusted the payouts on the Arizona Cardinals from the beginning of the season up until this week.

We also included some comments about what factors may of played into the movement of the odds.

Arizona Cardinals 2009 Season Odds to Win Super Bowl 43 (7/08-2/09)

7/27 +5500: Betting on the 2008-09 NFL season opens with the Cardinals as a big long shot at 55/1.

9/6 +9000: Season is starting tomorrow and the Arizona Cardinals odds are even longer now. Arizona is now paying $9000.00 for every $100.00 wagered. Arizona hits the road against the 49ers in Week 1 and the Cardinals are favored by 2.5.

9/10 +6500: Arizona’s 10-point win over San Francisco last week no doubt plays into them being favored at home against the Dolphins. Odds improve to 65-1.

10/8 +4000: After a 4-3 start, the Cards have dropped to 40/1 and are now going to Dallas, who is 4-point favorites.

10/21 +1800: Cardinals upset Dallas 30-24 and their odds drop to 18/1.

11/19 +1800: Odds have held steady almost a month, but this week they face the Super Bowl Champion Giants on the road.

11/26 +2000: A loss at New York drops odds to 20/1 as the playoff picture starts to materialize.

12/19 +5000: The Cards have dropped 2 of 3 and now travel into New England for their final road test of the season. Oddsmakers make a stand that Arizona won’t advance past this point.

1/16 +600: After playoff wins against Atlanta and Carolina, oddsmakers recognize the Cardinals are a serious threat to make it to Super Bowl 43 and drop them down to 6/1.

Super Bowl Week +200: The best you can find anywhere right now is 2/1, as most odds are less than that.

If the Arizona Cardinals are able to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII, anyone who made a future wager on the Cardinals at any point before the playoffs will see an incredible return on their wager.

Luckily for oddsmakers, Arizona’s surprising run went largely unnoticed and most were able to adjust accordingly as the money started to trickle in so their exposure will be greatly minimized.
