According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is a 7/4 favorite to win the 2013 Super Bowl MVP award. Ravens signal caller Joe Flacco has the next best odds at 13/5, while linebacker Ray Lewis is 13/2. San Francisco running back Frank Gore has the next best odds at 17/2.

Continuing with the odds, Ravens running back Ray Rice is 10/1 to win this year’s Super Bowl MVP award while 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree is 16/1. Baltimore receiver Anquan Boldin is 18/1 while his teammate is 20/1, and San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis is 22/1. Linebacker Aldon Smith is 28/1, tight end Dennis Pitta is 33/1, as is Baltimore safety Ed Reed.

The long shots to win the award are 49ers receiver Randy Moss, who is 40/1, while running back LaMichael James and linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs are 50/1, respectively. Safety Dashon Goldson, kicker David Akers and linebackers NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis are all 66/1. Ravens running back Bernard Pierce, 49ers tight end Delanie Walker, Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker and San Francisco receiver Ted Ginn Jr. are all 75/1, respectively. The long shot is backup quarterback Alex Smith, who is 100/1.

The past three Super Bowl MVPs have all been quarterbacks, as Drew Brees (2010), Aaron Rodgers (2011) and Eli Manning (2012) were the latest to win the award. The last non-quarterback to win the MVP was Steelers’ receiver Santonio Holmes in 2009, although the previous winners were Eli in 2008 and Peyton Manning in 2006. Receivers did win the award in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006 when Deion Branch and Hines Ward won the award, and the last time a defender won it was in 2003 when Buccaneers’ safety Dexter Jackson took home the hardware. You’d have to go all the way back to 1998 for the last time a running back won the Super Bowl MVP. Terrell Davis of the Broncos was named Super Bowl MVP when Denver knocked off Green Bay in SB XXXII.
