EL PASO, Texas (AP) – After a 20-year lapse, Notre Dame and Miami are renewing an ornery rivalry that defined college football during the 1980s and became known as Catholics versus Convicts.
Don’t expect the time off to lead to a lack of intensity when the teams meet Friday in the Sun Bowl, even if players on both sides weren’t born or were wearing diapers the last time these teams met in October 1990.
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Thursday that the Fighting Irish (7-5) respect the Hurricanes (7-5) because the players are old enough to remember Miami’s national championship season in 2001, as well as all the great players produced by that program.
Miami’s interim coach, Jeff Stoutland, says his players are “very much aware of the rivalry.”
