SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – When Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops needed someone to call plays after offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson was hired at Indiana, he didn’t hesitate in tapping Josh Heupel.
Heupel has, after all, plenty of experience in running the Sooners’ offense.
As Oklahoma’s quarterback in 2000, he was given loose reins, allowed to call many of the plays himself. It worked quite well: The Sooners won their seventh national championship with him under center.
A decade later, Heupel will help lead Oklahoma against Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Heupel, now 32, is co-offensive coordinator with Jay Norvell, but gets play-calling duties in the bowl and next season.
