PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) -Cincinnati Bengals assistant Bob Surace has been hired as football coach at Princeton University, his alma matter.
The center on the Tigers’ 1989 Ivy League championship team, Surace (suh-RACE) was to be formally introduced Wednesday. He replaces Roger Hughes, who was fired last month after 10 seasons at the school in New Jersey.
Surace has been an assistant coach with Cincinnati for nine seasons, the last six as assistant offensive line coach. Before joining the NFL team, he was head coach at Division III Western Connecticut State University for two years and an assistant at other schools. He was an assistant under Forrest Gregg in the Canadian Football League in 1994.
Surace is the first Princeton alumnus to serve as coach since Bob Casciola from 1973-77.
