TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) – Right after Missouri accepted a bid to the Insight Bowl, coach Gary Pinkel pleaded for Tigers fans to attend the game.
It seemed to help; Insight Bowl officials say they’re on a record pace.
A few of the other 35 bowls aren’t doing so well no matter what the coaches or schools have done, thanks to a still-sputtering economy, long-distance travel and oddball matchups.
Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen asked fans to go to the Military Bowl and sales haven’t been good, even with the game being played about 20 miles from campus. Georgia Tech offered $14 tickets to go to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., without much success.
Bowls like the BCS national championship and Rose Bowl are doing well, but tickets to those always seem to sell.
