M coach Billy Joe is taking over at Division II Miles College.
M.
``My sabbatical is over with,'' Joe, who spent last season out of coaching, said Wednesday in a phone interview with The Associated Press. ``I took some time out for rest, research and travel. Now, I am invigorated, I'm energized and I'm ready to go back to work.''
Joe replaces Wade Streeter, who was fired after seven seasons at the school, which competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Miles went 2-9 last season and had to forfeit its five wins the previous year for using an ineligible player.
M in 2005 when the school self-reported 196 rules violations among its 15 men's and women's sports over a seven-year span. An NCAA investigation found no wrongdoing by Joe, and the university later agreed to a $135,000 settlement with the coach.
Joe, who remained in Tallahassee, Fla., during his coaching hiatus, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame Divisional Class in July.
With a 237-108-4 career mark, he ranks fourth all-time in the Football Championship Subdivision in wins. He led FAMU to five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles in 11 seasons, including seven straight playoff trips and a semifinals appearance in 1999.
Joe also coached at Cheyney (Pa.) State and Central (Ohio) State, where he won two NAIA titles. He said he welcomes the task of trying to build a winner at Miles.
M in 1994, they had only won five games the previous year. I am very familiar with that scenario,'' Joe said. ``It just fuels my engine. That's just a challenge that to me is just another opportunity for success.''
