ATLANTA (AP) -Tim Tebow’s hopes for a third national championship ended with a fourth-quarter interception in the end zone, a throw that probably dashed any hopes for a second Heisman Trophy.
Tebow’s top-ranked Florida Gators had the ball at Alabama’s 6 early in the fourth quarter when his pass for tight end Aaron Hernandez was picked off by Alabama’s Javier Arenas in the end zone.
If Tebow had floated a soft pass over Arenas to an open Hernandez, Florida could have gained momentum for a comeback bid in Saturday’s 32-13 loss in Saturday’s Southeastern Conference championship game.
A dejected Tebow appeared to realize the mistake was the end of Florida’s undefeated run. He jerked his chin straps off his helmet, lingering on the field as he watched the replay. He then slowly walked back to the Florida sideline.
After the game, Tebow said, “it’s tough…it’s not how you want to go out.”
