Washburn (8-4) extended its lead to 21-3 on Jordan Brill’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Brad Cole with 11:31 left in the third quarter.
Southern Connecticut 45, Bryant 28
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Jarom Freeman rushed for three touchdowns and Steve Armstrong passed for three more as Southern Connecticut posted its first NCAA playoff win.
Southern Connecticut (9-3) scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.
Freeman set an NCAA Division II record the last time Southern Connecticut faced Bryant (8-3), just 15 days ago, with 418 yards on 34 carries. This time, he rushed for 146 yards on 25 carries.
Southern Connecticut advances to face California, Pa.
Abilene Christian 56, Mesa State 12
ABILENE, Texas (AP) – Billy Malone threw for 271 yards and four touchdowns to lead Abilene Christian.
Mark Gruner intercepted Malone’s first pass and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown for Mesa State (10-2). But Malone bounced back with three touchdown passes in the first half.
Johnny Knox caught three of Malone’s scoring passes, including a 75-yarder in the first quarter, and finished with five catches for 118 yards.
After winning its first home playoff game in 30 years, Abilene Christian (10-2) advanced to face Chadron State.
North Dakota 44, Winona State 2
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s defense held high-scoring Winona State to 28 yards rushing.
Ryan Chappell ran for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries for North Dakota (10-1) before leaving the game early in the third quarter with a foot injury.
Winona State (10-2) came in averaging 41 points per game.
North Dakota plays undefeated Grand Valley State in the second round.
Indiana, Pa. 45, West Chester 35
WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) – Andrew Krewatch threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Indiana’s comeback from a 35-27 fourth-quarter deficit.
West Chester (9-3) scored on Bill Zwaan’s third touchdown pass to take the 8-point lead. Krewatch’s touchdown pass to Mychal Skinner and Poohbear McNeal’s second score gave Indiana (9-2) the lead.
Indiana meets Shepherd in the second round.
Central Washington 40, Ashland 24
ELLENSBURG, Wash. (AP) – Johnny Lopez ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns in muddy conditions to lead Central Washington.
Mike Reilly went 14-of-24 for 218 yards for Central Washington (9-2).
Dawon Harvey finished with 115 yards on 16 carries for Ashland (8-2).
Central Washington will next play at Nebraska-Omaha.
Catawba 66, Albany State 35
SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) – Brad Roach set a Catawba school record with five touchdown passes.
Catawba (11-1) advances to face Valdosta State.
Roach passed for 340 yards. Brent Johnson caught nine passes for 155 yards and three scores. Antwan Strong caught five passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
Albany State (8-3) rallied from a 21-7 deficit to tie the score midway through the second quarter. Roach hit Johnson on a 14-yard scoring pass with 11 seconds left before the half to break the tie.
Delta State 45, Shaw 7
CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) – Chad Schroeder and Ben Stallings each rushed for two touchdowns for Delta State.
Schroeder gave Delta State (10-1) an early lead just seconds into the game on a 35-yard touchdown run.
Delta State took a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.
The only score for Shaw (8-4) came in the third quarter when Raymon Williams sprinted 90 yards for a touchdown.
Delta State outgained Shaw 563-242.
Delta State will play North Alabama in the second round.
