TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -Stanford needed a bit of luck to pull out a win over Arizona State, from the ball that caromed 15 yards into the hands of a receiver to the questionable holding call that nullified an interception.
The fortunate plays allowed the seventh-ranked Cardinal to rely on a different kind of luck: Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Andrew Luck.
Shaking off an interception and fumble, Luck led Stanford’s surprisingly ineffective offense on a late drive for the decisive score in a gritty, 17-13 road win over the Sun Devils (4-6, 2-5).
Luck hit all five of his pass attempts during his third career game-winning, fourth-quarter drive, giving Stanford (9-1, 6-1 Pac-10) its best start since 1951 and keeping its slim Rose Bowl hopes alive.
