Putting the perception of sportsmanship ahead of accuracy, the Bowl Championship Series demands that the programmers whose computer rankings are used to determine which teams play in the national title game remove margin of victory from the equation.
It’s another part of a postseason system that is stacked against BCS-busters Boise State, TCU and Utah this year. Playing against somewhat softer schedules, the schools have a tendency to win by a lot of points.
But that doesn’t matter to the BCS. Bowl championship officials say they don’t want to encourage coaches to run up the score.
A mathematician who has been rating teams for nearly four decades says that’s too bad. He says failing to take margin of victory into account dilutes football.
