BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Florida Atlantic says football coach Carl Pelini resigned Wednesday after acknowledging to school officials that he used illegal drugs.
Defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis also resigned after a post-practice meeting with athletic director Patrick Chun, who says school officials received word about the matter earlier this week.
An investigation is continuing, Chun says. Chun also says the investigation already suggests that only Pelini and Rekstis were involved. Chun says no criminal charges have been filed against either Pelini or Rekstis.
Offensive coordinator Brian Wright will serve as interim head coach for the Owls, who are 2-6 and play host to Tulane on Saturday.
Pelini's resignation was first reported by ESPN.com.
Pelini was 5-15 in two seasons at FAU, his first time as a head coach. He was previously at Nebraska, working as defensive coordinator for his brother, Bo.
"I apologize for exercising poor judgment," Pelini said in a statement. "My greatest concerns at this time are for me family, the dedicated FAU players and my staff. I am confident that Pat Chun and the University administration will continue to move the program forward."
The Owls (2-6) play Tulane at home Saturday.
