BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -Billy Cannon promises he and his old teammates won’t attempt a re-enactment of his famous 1959 punt return when they take the Tiger Stadium field Saturday night.
The 1959 Heisman Trophy winner will be honored on the 50th anniversary of his tackle-breaking, 89-yard, game-winning punt return against Mississippi.
The Halloween night runback lifted the Tigers to a 7-3 triumph over Ole Miss and has gone down as one of the most famous plays in LSU’s storied history. It was widely considered the play that clinched the Heisman for Cannon that year.
The 72-year-old Cannon says LSU has numerous extraordinary athletes who’ve made equally great plays in the half century since. He says timing is was what made his return so memorable.
