SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -Surprising Syracuse is 5-2 overall and alone in second place in the Big East at 2-1 as it prepares for a road trip to Cincinnati (3-4, 1-1).
Saturday’s 19-14 win at then-No. 20 West Virginia was Syracuse’s first against a ranked opponent on the road since the Orange shocked No. 18 Louisville 38-35 in 2007. It sent the Mountaineers out of the AP Top 25 and Syracuse actually received enough votes in this week’s AP poll to rank 29th.
Not bad for a team that went 10-37 overall, including 3-25 in the Big East, in four seasons under Greg Robinson (2005-08).
Linebacker Doug Hogue was honored Monday as national defensive player of the week. The senior had a team-high 10 tackles, eight for losses, two interceptions and a pass breakup. It’s the second time Hogue has won the award.
Tailback Delone Carter, the team’s leading rusher who gained 75 yards on nine carries in just over a quarter against West Virginia, suffered a bruised hip, but was expected at practice on Monday.
