EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – From coaches Rick Brooks to Chip Kelly, to quarterbacks Joey Harrington to Darron Thomas, Oregon’s image has evolved from a track-centric school with a mascot borrowed from Walt Disney into a legitimate national football presence.
The Ducks, coming off an open date, jumped a spot to No. 1 in the AP poll when previously top-ranked Ohio State lost 31-18 at Wisconsin. Oregon was ranked No. 2 behind Oklahoma in the first BCS rankings that came out on Sunday night.
The No. 1 ranking is another step toward prominence for Oregon’s program. The Ducks are the 43rd team to hold the top spot in the AP media poll, which dates to 1936.
On Thursday night, Oregon will get its first outing as a No.1 when the Ducks host UCLA.
