LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky coach Joker Phillips says the Wildcats may have salvaged their season with a comeback win over No. 10 South Carolina on Saturday night, but it’s way too early to declare the Wildcats are legitimate SEC East contenders.
Kentucky (4-3, 1-3 SEC) rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to stun the Gamecocks 31-28, the school’s first victory over South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier entered the game unbeaten in 17 tries against the Wildcats, but the Gamecocks (4-2, 2-2) came undone after freshman star Marcus Lattimore went down with an injury in the third quarter.
Phillips credited his players for “growing up before our eyes.”
The Wildcats will try to make it two straight on Saturday against quickly improving Georgia (3-4, 2-3).
