STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -Joe Paterno came prepared for the obvious question: Why is No. 14 Penn State playing Eastern Illinois?
The Hall of Fame coach pulled a sheet of paper out of his pocket and read a list of other programs also playing lower-division teams when asked why the Nittany Lions (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) filled out their midseason schedule with a breather.
Florida, Miami and Michigan were among the big names he rattled off as schools that also are playing FCS foes.
Paterno said during a testy exchange Tuesday with one reporter that Penn State scheduled Eastern Illinois for its 12th game in large part because revenue from home games helps finance Penn State’s 28 other sports.
Eastern Illinois plays in the Ohio Valley Conference.
