GRAMBLING, La. (AP) -Brandon Landers ran for one touchdown and passed for two more, but Tim Manuel’s first field goal would have been enough for Grambling State to beat MSVU on Saturday. The final score was 40-0.
Manuel opened the scoring with a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter, and kicked a 34-yard score with 52 seconds left in the second to put Grambling (4-1, 4-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference) up 27-0 by halftime.
Mississippi Valley (1-4, 1-4) managed 259 yards total offense to Grambling’s 334 while piling up nine penalties for 106 yards, to Grambling’s three for 20.
The Tigers’ first-half touchdowns were on Nigel Copeland’s 28-yard interception return and a 12-yard run by Cornelius Walker in the first quarter, and a 10-yard pass from Landers to Clyde Edwards, who had three catches to lead all receivers with 66 yards, with 12:15 left in the half.
Landers’ only rush was a 1-yard plunge for his second touchdown. He then threw a 43-yard pass to Kovarus Hills for the final score of the day. Manuel, who had made every kick until then, missed the final one.
Landers finished 10-for-23 with one interception for 185 yards. Frank Warren led all rushers with 104 yards on 20 carries for the Tigers.
Ronald Brewer led MVSU in rushing with 14 carries for 50 yards and was their No. 2 receiver with four catches for 28 yards. Semaj Williams was 10-for-21 with two interceptions for 75 yards. Bran Stargell caught four passes for 53 yards.
