BOONE, N.C. (AP) – Appalachian State will consider a move to college football’s top tier of competition.
The school announced Thursday it will conduct a feasibility study to evaluate shifting from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Bowl Subdivision. The analysis could take up to a year.
Athletic director Charlie Cobb says after the school’s recent success, which has included a stunning win over Michigan and three FCS national titles, “the time is right to analyze our options as a Division I athletics department.”
Appalachian State joins fellow Southern Conference member Georgia Southern and Montana in beginning discussions about moving to the FBS.
The Mountaineers won three straight national titles from 2005-07 and have led the FCS in attendance the past three years.
