AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas coach Charlie Strong says college football programs need to do a better job of molding players into responsible adults.
Strong met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Sunday, one day after Goodell spent three hours visiting a domestic violence hotline in Austin, Texas. The NFL has been under fire for its recent handling of players involved in domestic abuse cases.
The first-year Texas coach has dismissed nine players for rules violations or legal problems and has become renowned for his program’s five core values: honesty, no drugs, no guns, no stealing and treating women with respect.
Strong says colleges are sending out too many players of questionable character and they land rich contracts in the NFL. Strong calls that volatile mix a ”situation you probably want to avoid.”
