SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – There are 35 bowl games this year, and the NCAA’s football postseason licensing subcommittee might have to alter eligibility rules for playing in the postseason depending on how the season plays out.
There’s a chance not enough teams will meet the current criteria, and committee chair Nick Carparelli, Jr. says the NCAA already has begun to discuss the situation. He says there are a host of options if the circumstances arise.
One of those options might be allowing teams with losing records to play in the postseason.
A year ago, there were 34 bowl games and only 71 bowl-eligible teams for the 68 berths.
As the rules stand now, teams need six wins, including five against teams from the Football Bowl Subdivision, to qualify for a bowl.
