It’s hard not to be drawn in by the dazzling array of quarterbacks playing in the Big Ten this season. That doesn’t change the fact that the league title will likely be decided on the other side of the ball.
Seven of the nation’s stingiest defenses are in the Big Ten, which begins conference play this weekend. Wisconsin leads the way, ranking third with just 8.5 points allowed per game, followed by Michigan State and Penn State.
Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue round out an impressive list of top-notch defenses, all allowing 16 points or less per game so far.
The Badgers (4-0) host Nebraska (4-0) in the Big Ten’s marquee matchup Saturday. The Spartans (3-1) play at Ohio State (3-1), and Penn State (3-1) visits Indiana (1-3).
