STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -Temple running back Bernard Pierce left the Owls’ game Saturday against No. 23 Penn State with an apparent right ankle injury.
Pierce had to be helped off the field after getting stopped for a 2-yard on a second-and-5 at the Temple 12 midway through the third quarter. He was later carted from the sideline to the locker room.
A Temple spokeswoman said the team didn’t give out injury updates during a game.
Pierce, who was being touted by the school as a Heisman Trophy candidate, had run for two first-quarter touchdowns. The sophomore rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns last week in a win over Connecticut.
