Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe is out after the conference nearly collapsed for the second time in just over a year.
In a statement, the Big 12 says its board of directors and Beebe have reached a “mutual agreement” that Beebe will leave his job immediately.
Former Big Eight Commissioner Chuck Neinas told The Associated Press earlier Thursday that he had been contacted about serving as interim commissioner. Big 12 school presidents were meeting Thursday by telephone to discuss Beebe and stabilizing the fractured league.
Texas A&M announced earlier this month it will leave in 2012 to seek membership in the Southeastern Conference.
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State considered leaving the Pac-12 until Tuesday when the Pac-12 said it would not expand. Texas and Texas Tech also had considered leaving for the Pac-12 or the Atlantic Coast Conference.
