MIAMI (AP) -South Florida linebacker Brouce Mompremier was airlifted to a hospital after a frightening collision during the third quarter of the Bulls’ game at FIU on Saturday.
Doctors on the scene believed Mompremier suffered a spinal cord injury, but the severity was not immediately clear. He was removed from the field by ambulance after a delay of about 20 minutes and taken to a nearby soccer field, where a medical helicopter landed to fly the 6-foot-1, 230-pound standout to a hospital in downtown Miami.
With 6:43 left in the third quarter, Mompremier appeared to collide with teammate Carlton Williams while trying to make a play. Williams remained down for a few minutes before limping off the field with an apparent left leg injury, but Mompremier remained motionless on the turf, as South Florida teammates and even some FIU coaches knelt silently nearby as more than a dozen medical personnel rushed to his side.
lly was placed on a backboard and gently lifted onto a gurney, as players from both teams met at midfield for a prayer.
Mompremier, a starter for the 12th-ranked Bulls, is a senior from Miami, and some of his family members were in attendance for his homecoming.
