MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -Being a wide receiver at West Virginia mostly has meant throwing blocks to spring long gains by the Mountaineers’ stable of speedy running backs.
That tradition will never stop, but the team’s current crop of pass catchers is showing that they’re more than just obstacles for defenders chasing Noel Devine.
These guys can catch.
Sophomore Tavon Austin and redshirt freshman Stedman Bailey, along with junior wide receiver Jock Sanders and Devine catching passes out of the backfield, are bringing more balance to No. 22 West Virginia’s offense.
Austin, a first-year starter, leads the Big East with 21 catches for 281 yards. Sanders and Devine are in the top 10.
Austin and Bailey each caught two touchdown passes in a 31-17 win Saturday over Maryland.
