COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Steve Spurrier keeps thinking South Carolina will eventually break loose with its passing game and complete throw after throw. Sometime during each game, though, the Gamecocks coach realizes his best option is hand the ball to tailback Marcus Lattimore and leave with the victory.
That happened again Saturday night as South Carolina held off Navy, 24-21. Lattimore rushed for a career high 246 yards and three touchdowns. South Carolina ran 37 plays in the second half – Lattimore touched the ball on 26 of them to keep Navy off the field.
South Carolina (3-0) slipped two spots in the rankings Sunday to No. 12.
Spurrier said South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia played well enough. Still, the passing game struggled and when Spurrier wanted to take control, he kept calling on Lattimore.
