WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -Curtis Painter passed for 360 yards and three touchdowns, and Purdue beat Central Michigan 45-22 Saturday.
Painter completed 29 of 39 passes. He has 13 touchdown passes and no interceptions this season.
Purdue gained 586 yards, including 402 in the first half. The Boilermakers’ point total came despite five turnovers, including four fumbles.
Kory Sheets ran for a career-high 144 yards and two touchdowns for Purdue (3-0).
Dan LeFevour passed for 364 yards and two touchdowns, and Bryan Anderson had 10 catches for 101 yards for Central Michigan (1-2).
Purdue took its opening possession deep into Central Michigan territory before Selwyn Lymon fumbled after a catch at the Chippewas 2, and Central Michigan recovered.
After forcing a three-and-out, Purdue took over and got on the board with Chris Summers’ 20-yard field goal.
Central Michigan’s Ontario Sneed fumbled on the first play of the next possession, and Purdue’s Chris Avril recovered at the Central Michigan 19. On the next play, Jaycen Taylor ran for his first touchdown of the season to give Purdue a 10-0 lead with 8:51 left in the first quarter.
Sheets’ 18-yard touchdown run gave the Boilermakers a 17-0 lead with 4:31 left in the first quarter. Sheets scored again two minutes later to increase the lead to 24-0, a score that stood at the end of the quarter. Purdue outgained Central Michigan 300 yards to 46 in the first 15 minutes.
Painter threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Keller with 2:37 left in the second quarter, and Purdue took a 31-0 halftime lead.
Purdue linebacker Dan Bick recovered a fumble on Central Michigan’s first possession of the second half, and the Boilermakers quickly took advantage. Painter’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Adams made the lead 38-0 with 12:09 left in the third quarter.
Central Michigan finally scored when LeFevour found Justin Hoskins out of the backfield for a 15-yard touchdown pass that made it 38-7 with 8:03 left in the third quarter.
LeFevour’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Justin Gardner trimmed Purdue’s advantage to 38-14 with 1 minute left in the third quarter.
Central Michigan converted on a fake punt early in the fourth quarter. Hoskins’ 1-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass from LeFevour to Joe Bockheim cut Purdue’s lead to 38-22.
Dorien Bryant returned the kickoff 58 yards to give Purdue possession at the Central Michigan 39. Painter found Lymon for a 5-yard score to bump the lead to 45-22 with 9:07 to go.
Central Michigan reached the Purdue 5 on its next possession, but Purdue cornerback Terrell Vinson stopped Antonio Brown for 1 yard on a fourth-and-2.
