BOSTON (AP) – The Boston College Eagles are honoring a victim of the Sept. 11 attacks by wearing special uniforms with red bandanna trim for their game against Southern California.
Former Boston College lacrosse player Welles Crowther was credited with saving at least a dozen people in the south tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He died when the building collapsed after he went back to try to save others. Crowther was identified by those he saved by the red bandanna he always wore.
The Eagles wore red shoes along with socks, gloves and helmets with the red bandanna pattern and trim. The school handed out 6,000 red bandannas to the student section. The coaching staff also wore special gear with the red bandanna accents.
Crowther’s family was to be recognized on the field.
