ELON, N.C. (AP) -Scott Riddle passed for three touchdowns and Karlos Sullivan returned a punt 80 yards for another score to help Elon to a 59-16 rout of West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Riddle opened the scoring for the Phoenix (1-1) with a 51 yard TD pass to Terrell Hudgins at 5:40 of the first quarter. The Bobcats (1-1) tied it at 7-7 a few minutes into the second on a 2-yard run by Harry Lorusso. But Elon jumped ahead to stay on a 27-yard field goal by Andrew Wilcox at 9:19, and added a score on Riddle's 14-yard pass to Michael Mayers shortly before the break for a 17-7 halftime lead. Sullivan's scoring punt return came in the final seconds of a 28-point third quarter for the Phoenix, who also scored on another Riddle pass, a 9-yard run by Brandon Newsome and Bo Williamson's end zone recovery of a blocked Bobcat punt for a 45-13 lead. The Phoenix (1-1) passed for 401 yards and rushed for 150 yards on 30 carries. Riddle made 23 passes for 362 yards, while Donny Kirby added one 39-yard pass. The Bobcats (1-1) managed only 78 yards on 44 carries and 185 yards in the air. |
