TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -Players from No. 18 Florida State and archrival Miami will shake hands in a gesture of sportsmanship before kickoff Monday night.
With one precaution, that is.
Part of Florida State’s pregame traditions include a flaming spear driven into the midfield turf moments before kickoff. To avoiding adding fire to the rivalry, the Miami-FSU handshake will take place during warm-ups.
“When they throw the spear, that’ll be too close,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said Saturday. “Both coaching staffs got together and said that’s too much.”
The American Football Coaches Association has encouraged each team to have players shake hands before kickoff this season.
