BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -Special teams play could be huge when No. 3 Boise State and No. 10 Virginia Tech meet Monday night in Maryland.
The Broncos and Hokies both excel in making plays on special teams.
In his 23 seasons as coach of the Hokies, Frank Beamer’s team has blocked 124 kicks in 281 games. The Hokies have scored 44 touchdowns on blocked kicks and kick returns.
But Boise State has also risen into the elite of special teams play.
The Broncos have blocked 18 kicks in Chris Petersen’s four years and returned seven for scores. They also converted a fake punt on 4th-and-9 from their own 33 yard-line in the third quarter in the Fiesta Bowl last year, keeping alive a drive for the winning score.
